Applications for mobile devices are developed for specific devices. An application that runs on devices of one manufacturer might not work on the device of another manufacturer. Sometimes, an application might not even work for different devices of the same manufacturer.

For this reason, manufacturers provide a platform for users to go and check what applications are compatible with their device. For example, Apple App Store and BlackBerry App world are application storefronts for Apple and BlackBerry users, respectively.
